Research Areas
- Probiotics: The World Health Organization's 2001 definition of probiotics is "live micro-organisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host". We are interested in isolation and utilization of probiotic microorganisms for humans and animals. Lactobacillus, Enterococcus and Bacillus strains from foods and guts are our main research targets.
- Gut Microbiota: Recenly, analysis of gut microbiota revealed that microorganisms may influence the balance of animal bodies. Diabetes and obesity are also associated with gut microbiota. Moreover, the brain is also affected by gut microbiota via the bran-gut-axis. We are interested in isolation of good bacterial strains to improve the balance of animal and human gut microbiota for their healthy life.
- Bacterial Genomics: High-throughput sequencing technololgies have improved the environment of genome sequencing. It doesn't cost a lot of money to sequence bacterial genomes. Based on such reasonal prices, we are sequencing many bacterial genomes to identify biologically interesting stories for fermented foods, improvement of animal growth, and protection of infectious diseases.
- Genetic Engineering of LAB (GE-LAB): Genetic engineering of microorganisms have been used to produce functional molecules for drugs, nutrients, food additives and feed additives to improve animal and human health. We are interested in oral vaccine development to protect humans and animals from infectious pathogens such as influenza virus, PED virus, etc. As a vehicle, we are using lactic acid bacteria such as Lactococcus lactis and Lactobacillus plantarum. Biological containment of such GE-LAB is very important to use them in an ecologically friendly way.
- Robotics for Microbiology (Smart Farms): How can we control microorganisms in the environments by using robots and IoT devices with sensors and actuators. Harmful microorganisms is easily controlled by UV-C and Air-Flowing systems. We will be able to design robots in a microbiological way.
